Planning for your future should always include the writing of a will. But if you have a large estate behind you, settling for a simple will is not going to protect your assets.

It has recently been reported by The Law Society Gazette about a solicitor who prepared a £140 plus VAT will for a client with a wealth in excess of £100m. The property investor who passed away three years ago had his original 2012 will re-written in 2014.

Kevin Reeves received a service on his new will “akin to the quality of clothes at Primark.” The 2014 re-written will saw dramatic amendments and deletions fitting into the cost of service initially negotiated beforehand.

Preparing a will can be emotionally challenging, however, in the unfortunate event of your passing, it is the only way your personal assets can be protected. Specialist solicitors have knowledge in dealing with the creation of wills, and this particular case is a rare experience.

“Whilst we do offer fixed fee services,” says Lucy Atwill, a Solicitor & Partner at CWC, “we do not treat clients as one size fits all and certainly where clients have very complex estates.

It is our duty to impress upon them the need for careful consideration and advice, even if that should cost them more than a basic simple will.

Above all, it is vitally important that the solicitor assisting makes contemporaneous notes of the meetings and ensures the clients truly understand the effect of what they are doing.”
